January - Concentrations of Fulvous Whistling Ducks and other wildfowl may occur and brightly coloured bishops and whydahs are breeding.

February
- Waterbirds begin to leave the area. Roosts of Eastern Red-footed Falcons are regular and European Hobbys can be conspicuous.

March - Large concentrations of Parasitic Weavers can occur, there is always some northward passage of Southern Carmine Bee-eaters and the first Laughing Doves arrive and begin calling. Many palearctic migrants start to move north.

 


 

April - Many dry season migrants arrive such as Crowned Plovers. White-throated Swallows and Cinnamon-breasted Rock Buntings move through on passage and there is a considerable influx of Grey-headed Gulls.

May - Bronze-winged Coursers can be abundant on passage and Dusky Larks invariably appear. Harlequin Quails are often present and as Swallow-tailed Bee-eaters arrive, Red-capped Robins leave.

June - More dry season migrants arrive such as Temminck’s Coursers and Capped Wheatears.

 

 

July - In some years this is  agood month for Purple Rollers and in others large concentrations of predators may be attracted to rodent plagues. At the end of the month the first Yellow-billed Kites appear and start nest building.

August - More Yellow-billed Kites arrive, closely followed by Wahlberg’s Eagles. Fish Eagles are busy nesting, the first palearctic waders start to appear and breeding activity in the woodland increases.

September - The first European Swallows, European Bee-eaters and Willow Warblers arrive as do many afrotropical migrants such as Violet-backed Starlings, Chestnut-bellied Kingfishers and Pennant-winged Nightjars at the end of the month.

 

October - Waterbirds continue to concentrate. Coppery Sunbirds are usually seen in breeding plumage for the first time and large numbers of afrotropical and palearctic migrants arrive such as Pygmy Kingfishers, Red-backed Shrikes, cuckoos and warblers.

November - Huge numbers of migrants are arriving such as Abdim’s Storks, Lesser Spotted Eagles, Narina Trogons, Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters and Red-capped Robings.

December - Cattle Egret numbers soar and Glossy Ibis may be seen in huge concentrations.
